Yehia hangs up his gloves

Al Ittihad goalkeeper Ahmed Yehia has decided to call time on his career in the wake of Thursday’s traumatic 5-0 defeat to Ceramica Cleopatra.

Yehia suffered a tremendous loss with the death of his brother on Wednesday, although he insisted on playing for Emad El Nahhas’ side the following day.

However, the 34-year-old had a game to forget after shipping five goals against the Gold and Blood, including four in the space of just 15 second-half minutes.

Yehia was jeered by the club’s fans during the match and asked to be substituted with 11 minutes left on the clock, with the reaction from the stands moving him to tears as he left the pitch.

The veteran shotstopper subsequently announced his retirement from football on Friday via a post on social media.

“Thanks Egypt football fans for the support. After Thursday’s incidents I decided to quit football permanently,” Yehia said on Facebook.

Yehia only joined Al Ittihad in August last year from El Entag El Harby, where he had spent the previous three seasons. He was also on the books of Smouha before making the move to the Military Machines on 2018.
